●やっとおむつが取れたばかりという年ごろ an age when an infant has finally just gotten out of diapers

・子供がやっと寝ついた. The child finally fell asleep.

・「もう読んじゃった?」「まだやっと3 分の 1」 “Have you read it?”―“I've finally just gotten up to about a third.”

・やっとしつこい風邪が治った. I've finally gotten over a stubborn cold.

・やっと頂上に着いたと思ったら, 目的の山頂はさらに先だった. When we finally arrived at the crest, we saw (to our chagrin) that the summit we were aiming for lay farther in front of us.

・やっとわかった. I see it now.

・やっと二人きりになれたね. Alone at last.

・夕方になってやっとその事実を知った. It was not till evening that I knew the facts.

・君もやっとその気になってくれたか. So you've finally made up your mind to do it [come to see things my way].

2 〔かろうじて〕 barely; narrowly; by the skin of one's teeth; 〔ぎりぎりで〕 just; only; 〔ひどい苦難の末にようやく〕 with [after] much [painstaking] effort; with difficulty; laboriously.

●やっとのこと(で)…する barely manage to do; (finally) get around to doing

・やっとのこと(で)暮らしていく barely manage (to get by) [make ends meet, scrape out a meager existence, pick up a scanty living]

・やっとのこと(で)列車に間に合った. I was barely in time for the train. | I just caught [made] the train.

・つま先立ちになってやっとのことで棚(_たな)に手が届いた. Standing on tiptoe he could just barely reach the shelf.

・やっとのことで借金を完済した. With great difficulty he managed to pay off his debt.

●この道幅では小型車 2 台がすれ違うのがやっとだ. The road is so narrow that there's scarcely room for two compact cars to pass each other.

・この年金額では食べていくのがやっとだ. On a pension this small, it's all one can do to put food on the table.

・息が切れて「水をくれ」と言うのがやっとだった. Out of breath, it was all he could do to ask for water.

・これだけの細工になると, 二月(_ふたつき)に一つ仕上げるのがやっとだ. This kind of fine work would require two months just to turn out one piece.

やっとの思いで with difficulty; with a supreme effort [act of will]; with supreme self-control; at the last extremity; barely.

●やっとの思いで涙をこらえる restrain [hold back] tears with difficulty

・彼女はやっとの思いで立ち上がった. She struggled to her feet.
